ALTECO is a broad partnership of Christian individuals and organizations that focus on the empowerment and holistic development of the 400+ tribal nations of the Amazon basin and lowlands of South America.

We assist tribal leaders in forming their own networks and infrastructures, so they can better coordinate their leadership resources and assume greater responsibility and autonomy.

ALTECO is an acronym for Amazon & Lowland Tribal Empowerment Coalition. The Amazon & Lowlands region of South America is inhabited by 400+ tribal indigenous groups. This area covers tribal territory within 11 countries.

Where We Serve

ALTECO serves tribal territory within 11 countries.

Indigenous leaders have risen up to identify, evaluate, and guide the holistic empowerment endeavors taking place within this region.

Between 207 to 250 tribal ethnic groups have been identified as yet isolated from a clear message of the Gospel in their language.

Brazil

Amazon and/or lowland tribes: 305

Challenges / Issues

Loss of traditional territories to hydroelectric projects and extractive industries; Brazil has highest concentration of indigenous people groups living in isolation.

Prayer Focus

Pray for the indigenous network of Christians (CONPLEI) as it actively disciples others and shares the gospel of Jesus. Pray for AMEI, the Christian indigenous women’s network, encouraging women as they grow in their faith and disciple each other and the next generations.

Colombia

Amazon and/or lowland tribes: 87

Challenges / Issues

Many years of armed conflict and illegal drug trade resulting in massive displacements of indigenous communities and widespread loss of language and culture.

Prayer Focus

Pray for the indigenous network (LICAC) and the forming women’s network (AMEIC) as they encourage each other to grow in their relationships with Christ and stir others to discover their need for Christ.

Guyana

Amazon and/or lowland tribes: 9

Challenges / Issues

Conflict due to poorly regulated exploitation of mineral resources in indigenous territories.

Prayer Focus

Pray for consensus building solutions to conflict. Pray that Christian indigenous leaders will call for non-discriminatory practices that lead to equitable solutions for all people involved and open doors for the gospel in many people’s lives.

Suriname

Amazon and/or lowland tribes: 15

Challenges / Issues

Lack of guaranteed land rights for indigenous peoples.

Prayer Focus

Pray for the indigenous people to be granted land rights. Pray for the indigenous church to be active in seeking human rights for all people in Suriname and leading in the pursuit of true freedom in Christ.

French Guayana

Amazon and/or lowland tribes: 8

Challenges / Issues

Illegal mining resulting in severe environmental degradation and health problems within indigenous territories.

Prayer Focus

Pray for legal interventions that will lead to ethical treatment of people and the environment. Pray for indigenous Christians to lead people to walk in paths of righteousness.

Ecuador

Amazon and/or lowland tribes: 10

Challenges / Issues

Loss of traditional territories to oil exploration and other extractive industries.

Prayer Focus

Please pray for tribal people in jungle communities to be safe and live and walk in justice. Pray also for their leaders and church leaders to have wisdom and to serve the people well.

Peru

Amazon and/or lowland tribes: 50

Challenges / Issues

Loss of traditional territories and environmental degradation due to oil and gas and other extractive industries; 75% of the Peruvian Amazon region is covered by oil and gas concessions.

Prayer Focus

Pray for the indigenous network (RELENAP) and women’s network (AMEI Peru) and children’s network as well as the consortium of national & internationals (ADN) working to strengthen the indigenous church.

Bolivia

Amazon and/or lowland tribes: 34

Challenges / Issues

Loss of traditional territories to oil exploration and other extractive industries.

Prayer Focus

Pray for fair trade use of traditional territories and resources. Pray for the indigenous people to be educated and improve literacy rates. Pray for Christians to have access to Bible training and discipleship.

Paraguay

Amazon and/or lowland tribes: 19

Challenges / Issues

Loss of traditional territories and very high rates of poverty among indigenous peoples.

Prayer Focus

Pray for indigenous people to be justly compensated for concessions of traditional territories. Pray for empowering jobs and equitable industries to employ indigenous people. Pray for the indigenous church to be front runners in innovation and care for the people of Paraguay.

Argentina

Amazon and/or lowland tribes: 20

Challenges / Issues

Land rights violations against indigenous people resulting in violent conflict.

Prayer Focus

Pray for peaceful, equitable solutions for land rights conflicts. Pray for indigenous Christians to step into leadership positions and promote peace and equality.

Venezuela

Amazon and/or lowland tribes: 40

Challenges / Issues

Illegal mining resulting in severe environmental degradation and health problems within indigenous territories.

Prayer Focus

Pray that basic humanitarian aid (food, water, medical supplies) will be allowed into Venezuela. Pray for political solutions that result in economic recovery. Pray for biblical healing from trauma and injustice. Pray for the indigenous church to be leaders in meeting people’s physical and spiritual needs.
